Meditation and Yoga Tips

There are many ways to improve the quality of your life, but one that you may not have thought of is that of meditation.  Some don’t believe it can offer them benefits but there is one thing that meditation and yoga can definitely provide to you:  the ability to relax.

Yoga is a great tool for both exercise and relaxation.  Both meditation and yoga have been shown to provide improvements for those that are in need of stress relief.  And, when you learn how to do them effectively, it takes minutes a day to wash away your stresses.

So, how does this fit into your lifestyle fitness plan?  It’s simple.  You need to spend ten minutes each day, usually before breakfast, quietly meditating or doing yoga.  Ten minutes per day is all that it takes to see significant improvement in your overall well being.

When you take into account all the things that you are doing in the morning you may not think you have time.  But, again, invest the time for a couple of weeks and you are sure to see the improvements quickly and they will not be such a demanding time taker.

You can learn how to do either meditation or yoga (or both if you like) easily.  Some people are familiar with it enough that they can learn how to do is through at home study.  It’s often a better solution, though to learn with others through a professional.

Get together with a friend and take a class at your local recreation center or your community college.  You’ll find that once you learn the technique you can do the process on your own, easily.

Yoga Meditation – How Yoga and Meditation Go Hand in Hand : yoga meditation

Yoga meditation is not only about physical postures! Our modern day yoga class tends to focus on postures only. If a little deeper study of yoga meditation is applied then it will become apparent that postures are only a small part of the practice. Postures are necessary to learn, but yoga meditation is essentially to eliminate feelings of incompletion and limitation in order to connect with our true Self.

Traditionally there are four paths of yoga. Jnana, Bhakti, Karma and Raja. These paths are not separate, they all work together in forming the art of yoga. Only a Yogi or Yogini will concentrate on perfecting the art of one of these paths only. Most commonly all four paths are blended together to balance out yoga practices. Most meditators will have preference for one or two of the paths. This is natural, but even so, it is impossible to abandon or ignore the other paths.

• Jnana explores the nature of our being. It’s focus is on knowledge and wisdom.
• Bhakti concentrates on services to God, love, compassion and devotion.
• Karma is service to others, mindfulness and actions.
• Raja emphasized meditation. It deals directly with our mind’s thoughts.

Even though these paths are all integrated, it is helpful to understand which one is mostly aligned with your objectives. This path will be your main emphasis and the others will be used to enhance your chosen path.

In yoga meditation train your mind to be one-pointed. There will be many obstacles along the way. Some of these may include doubt, laziness, fear of failure etc. Getting around these obstacles and not letting them interrupt your journey can be achieved by training your mind to stay focused on your objectives.

A mantra or short prayer can also assist you in achieving this.

Virga means the energy of conviction and persistence. Make sure that you are firmly aware of your convictions. Develop a determination and a strong attitude to succeed in your yoga meditation.

In practice one will focus on the use of the body, senses, breath and different levels of the mind. An awareness of these will be developed and intensified until the center of consciousness is attained.

Contrary to some beliefs, yoga meditation is not a religion. It does, however, contain principles that can be related to certain religions. It is also holistic, dealing with a wide variety of practices including meditation, contemplation, prayer and mantra.

Yoga and Meditation are an important part of the lives of many people.

Yoga Meditation Technique For Beginners : yoga meditation

Do you want to experience the health benefits that can be afforded by practicing yoga meditation? If you do, you can either buy (or borrow from the local library) a yoga meditation DVD or sign up and attend a class. If you’re completely new to it, it’s important that you learn how to properly execute your yoga meditation technique. There are many techniques you’ll need to learn but there are a couple of basics that are essential. Many of these work with Mantras you have to recite.

When it comes to executing a correct yoga meditation technique, one important thing you’ll need to learn is keeping a steady gaze. While you’re doing this meditation, find an object in the room, fix your eyes on that object and keep gazing at that object for the duration of the session. Why is this yoga meditation technique so important?

For one, it helps you achieve and maintain a good balance while you’re doing it. The object serves as your point of focus. For another, fixing your gaze on the object helps to calm your mind. Imagine if you kept looking around the room or switching your gaze from one object to another while you’re doing your yoga exercises.

Another thing you need to learn and remember as you do your meditation technique is to observe proper breathing. Breathing is actually a crucial component of meditation. In order to experience the benefits of it, you’ll need to be sure you’re breathing in and out properly especially at the right instances. You need to let go of conscious thought and when you catch yourself thinking, let the thought go and concentrate on breathing again.

Focus (through maintaining a steady gaze) and proper breathing are just two things you will learn if you choose to sign up for a yoga and meditation class.

With this set-up, you’ll have a knowledgeable instructor who can show you the proper way of executing your chosen technique. He can also immediately correct you if you are doing anything incorrectly. This interactive and immediate feedback is something you won’t get from a meditation DVD or by reading an instruction book on. When you are performing your meditation exercises the right way, you can expect to see results right away.

Not only is yoga meditation a wonderful exercise that strengthens your body, it’s also a great experience for your mind and spirit. Search for a yoga meditation technique you feel comfortable with and practice it several times a week. Many who have tried it have discovered that doing it regularly benefits their body, mind and soul.

Ancient Indian philosophy and wisdom is hidden in the physical and mental exercises we call yoga and meditation. Brit Forchet helps to shed some more light on these beneficial pratices on her pages about Yoga for Beginners and Yoga Meditation.

the Benefits of Yoga Meditation : yoga meditation

When many people hear the word “meditate,” they think of a man in a loincloth with a serene look on his face sitting cross-legged on top of a mountain. Meditation, however, isn’t nearly as esoteric as people think. It doesn’t require years of study or mystical knowledge from on high; all it takes is practice.

Meditation is a spontaneous flow of consciousness when all the conditions are just right. It’s about listening inwardly with a quiet mind for the wisdom and guidance of a more expansive and unlimited mind.

All the arts of relaxation — breath control, contemplation, prayer, affirmation, repetition of a mantra, and visualization — are different, but they all direct you toward self-realization and a deep meditative state. Different systems of thought and traditions vary in their meditation techniques, but they all have the same goal: to reach the point of stillness, quiet, and communion with the essence of your being.

With meditation, you discover how to quiet your mind and increase your level of energy and enjoyment of life. You experience the natural joy of being in meditation, and you establish a greater confidence and a higher understanding. Meditation can deliver deep inner peace; increase your mental stamina; improve your memory; enlarge your multitasking abilities; and teach you to organize your internal awareness and concentration.

You can practice different forms of meditation:

Mantra meditation: You focus your attention on a repeated word, thought, or sound.

Metta or loving kindness meditation: You practice acts of generosity or loving kindness toward others.

Stair-step meditation (or modified progressive relaxation): You focus on different areas of your body with the aim of relaxing those areas one at a time.

Mindfulness: You observe whatever goes through your mind without judging or analyzing it.

(Some yoga practitioners don’t consider this a true form of meditation, but rather a practice or deeper step toward meditation.)

Different Styles of Meditation

Nothing is impervious to change and so is not meditation. While the fundamental focus of meditation has not shifted from what it had started with, there have been several other changes that have led to different styles being followed at different places of the earth over different periods. It helps to know what styles are in practice today so that you can make an informed choice when you plan to undertake meditation yourself.

Watching Your Breathing

One of the very basic forms of meditation is to just control the way you breathe. All you are supposed to do is to sit in an upright position, close your eyes and just concentrate on the way you breathe. While this sounds pretty simple and is actually not that hard to practice, it can make a world of difference. During our day-to-day life we hardly have the time to settle down for a few minutes. That means irregular breathing. Allowing our body some time to actually stay calm and carry on the processes quietly can make a significant difference to how our body performs. With more fresh air in our lungs the heart performs at its best and our body feels rejuvenated.

Watching Your Thoughts

This is one of the tougher practices of meditation. Though physically not that demanding, it is an emotional challenge. The idea is to clear your mind of any thoughts and just let it be. You can sit in the normal upright posture and with your legs crossed. But the trick is to let go of your mind, because, at least initially, the more you will try this, the harder will it get.

Walking Meditation

One of the more innovative versions of meditation, this not only helps you at the level of the mind but you also get some exercise as you pace up and down.

You can practice this in a room or outdoors, as long as there are no distractions. Don’t try it in a room where the television is on or in a park with children playing. Again the process is to maintain a relatively brisk pace as you focus on your breathing and walking. Concentrate only on these two things and let go of your other concerns. Staying focused here is the real challenge.

Meditating While Chanting

This is a good style of meditation for the beginners. It has often been a problem for the ones who are starting off on meditation to actually stay focused and not let thoughts wander into their heads. Chanting a mantra can be of much help for them. This helps to keep away other thoughts and lets you focus more. The chant should be chosen carefully so that it is easy for you to remember and say. You need not say it aloud and can just repeat it in your head. As long as you are able to stay focused you know it is working right for you.

Yoga Meditation For Phobias : yoga meditation

Is it possible to focus on positive thoughts, and train the mind to think rationally? In short, yes – It is possible. However, training the mind is more difficult than training the body. If we are overcome by irrational fear, or extreme misery, it is even more difficult to focus on reality and positive thoughts.

Training the mind is a daily ritual for mental maintenance and cultivation of positive energy. One method for training the mind is to focus on ideas that bring us to calmer states of mind. Each of us has something that gives us inner strength. Some Karma Yoga practitioners cultivate a greater sense of calm, by doing for others.

We all have friends, family, or a pet. If we help someone in need, this creates a state of inner calm, where we feel needed, and our problems appear to be smaller. Focusing on others is the polar opposite of focusing on our internal negative thoughts. When we focus on thoughts that overwhelm us with fear, we see our problems as larger than life itself.

If you are going to open the door to your mind, you can choose the direction to travel. For many people, it is easy to see themselves as helpless, to participate in worthless habits, and to see others in a negative light. The frame of mind we have is a choice.

It is true that none of us is perfect. At the same time, Yoga is a system which helps all of us train our minds through meditation, and use these practical applications in daily life. Yogic science is constantly evolving in many directions. Yoga continues to change with each century, but training the mind has always been an advanced Yogic practice.

Within the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali describes Eight Limbs. These are eight methods for improving life. Four of the eight are directly related to meditation. A novice does not attain Samadhi during the first practice. The novice does not know what Samadhi is, and an advanced practitioner may not be able to attain it.

To practice meditation with the purpose of purging irrational fear or extreme misery, will require some guidance from a competent guru or counselor. This allows one to feel the foundation of this mental exercise we call “meditation.” Once meditation is mastered, it should be practiced daily. The ultimate reward of meditation is when the mind becomes one’s best ally.
