There is no set date when this great ancient art-science began, but it goes back thousands of years. Stone carvings in the Indus Valley depicting yoga postures date back over 5,000 years. Traditionally, yoga was a spiritual practice, its goal being union with the Absolute or Divine. The various exercises associated with Hatha Yoga were performed to prepare the body for long periods of meditation. The word yoga means to join or unite together, and the practice joins together the body, mind, and spirit. The practice is often associated with Hinduism, but pre-dates the religion. As have other religions, Hinduism has incorporated elements of this art into its practices.

After you consult with your doctor find a good yoga instructor. Getting a referral from someone you trust would be helpful. Make sure that they practice traditional forms of yoga brought out of India that will teach you meditation as well as physical poses.

Posture, balance and body alignment through yoga. The yoga poses are meant to train the body to be healthy and supple. Consistent practice and application will result in improved posture, and an increased sense of balance, with head, shoulders and pelvis in proper alignment. Additionally, unlike many other forms of exercise, yoga helps stretch and strengthens both sides of the body equally.

The practice of yoga focuses on body alignment and awareness, in the belief that every part of the body has an effect on every other part, as well as the body as a whole. Mindfulness Meditation and Yoga Postures

The first, chochmah (wisdom), is the flash of insight or initial comprehension we have of a concept that is powerful and raw, yet superficial in that we don’t perceive the details as separate from the totality. You can forget trying to explain it to someone else. Next, comes binah (understanding) which entails considering and dissecting the subject in all its details and subtleties. Here’s the point at which you could finally convey something intelligible to your friend who’s been wondering what’s on your mind.So, meditation really refers to contemplating a concept ever-deeper, plumbing its depths and forging a stronger and stronger connection to it. Breathing might help you focus on the concept, but the movement of air, on its own, is not the Kabbalah’s intent by meditation.Things get even more interesting with the third stage: daat. And it’s here that Kabbalah’s approach to wisdom differs from other spiritual paths and forms of soul wisdom.While daat literally means “to know,” Biblically it’s used to connote intimate relations between man and woman, which in effect is a powerful bonding, union, and coming together of energies and purposes. That’s exactly the ultimate goal of wisdom: learn the general concept well; delve deeply into it via meditative contemplation, pulling it apart and dissecting while forming a relationship with its every movement; and then become one with it, make it your thoughts and feelings, become the concept and attach yourself to it until it’s the air you breath and the thoughts in your mind.And then what happens? You get emotions. Deeply contemplating something until you unite with it produces emotions. Why? Because according to Kabbalah, one’s emotions lie dormant within the mind until they are born out of a related intellectual contemplation. Contemplate fear or awe producing thoughts and that’s the emotion you get. In other words, if after deeply considering a subject you don’t feel at least some inkling to move towards something or away from something else, your meditation is lacking.But you already do this, except you don’t realize.You walk down the street on a hot day and see someone else walking with a chocolate ice cream cone; your favorite. Although you keep waking and look elsewhere, you continue contemplating the ice cream until you can taste it in your mouth and are now scanning the stores for ice cream – chocolate of course. Or, the last movie you saw that really moved you. If you closed your eyes right now you’d be able to bring up the scenes and sounds, and even re-experience the emotions you felt when watching the movie, the sadness and loss when a character dies in the end.While a movie does the work for you and makes it easy, but less real, the formula is the same: learn something, review it several times until you can contemplate it in your mind with needing the words in front of you, and then fasten your mind to it like a nail in the wall…and the emotions will come as you connect to the concept and it becomes what you think about.Tired of the negative thoughts, self-doubts, fears and worries and anxieties? The Value of Meditation in the Life of a Christian

I have been a Christian now for almost 30 years and can tell you that my Christian walk prior to practicing meditation and being still before the Lord doesn’t even compare to my life afterward.

Through the practice of meditation I have and continue to learn how to quiet my mind and free it from the mental distractions so prevalent today. I have gained greater authority over my thoughts and what I allow to penetrate my mind and heart. I also feel much more in tuned with God through the Holy Spirit. Through meditation, I have created a greater space for God in my heart and mind because it’s not so bogged down with other stuff and a greater insight to the scriptures.

I don’t meditate because it’s a fad, in fact, on most mornings I’d prefer to do something else. Sitting in silence and meditating on the scriptures for 30 minutes in my natural mind seems unfruitful. It’s no different than eating healthy or performing regular exercise. If I could just throw caution to the wind and live a life of self-indulgence with out consequences, I’d be the first in line.

I meditate, not because I want to, but because I have to if I want to maintain my peace of mind, deny myself, get closer to God, detach from worldly philosophies and renew my mind. For me, entering into God presences is much like in the Old Testament, when Moses entered the Tent of Meetings or the priests entered the Holy of Holies to dwell in the presence of God. It is said that when Moses left the Tent that his body was so illuminated that no one could look at him. When I leave the presence of God, I often feel the same. God’s peace, joy, and love overtake me and I feel empowered.

Meditation is a tool that helps me to realize God in a more intimate and spiritual way. The Bible says that God is a Spirit. If we only try to understand God with our physical mind, we are missing out on so much of who God is because our mind is only one dimensional and of limited understanding. 1 Corinthains 2 tells us that The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God…This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.

Romans 8: 26-27 declares, In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through “wordless” groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

Meditating on God’s word, being still before him, and dwelling in his presence provides us with a wonderful opportunity to connect with God on a level deeper than mere words or thoughts can suffice. Just like a bike can be an instrument for promoting physical fitness- meditation promotes mental, emotional, and spiritual fitness.

As Christians, we can get caught up in the logistics of meditation, but the logistics really aren’t all that important. To meditate means to ponder, contemplate, reflect, and focus. Your objective for meditation will determine the method that you use. If you want to quiet your mind and eliminate toxic thinking, meditating on a mantra, sacred word, or passage of scripture is a good start. Meditation does not have to be a spiritual or religious experience. Many people meditate for stress relief and relaxation.

Jesus said that we must decrease so that God can increase in us. The Apostle said that we must die daily. God wants us to die to ourselves so that he can indwell us. However, if we are filled with self, it leaves little room for God to enter in. Through various methods of meditation, we can become a vessel that God can use.

Whether as Christians we meditate on a sacred word, inspirational text, the Word of God, or even just dwell in God’s presence or even use a guided Christian meditation Cd or recording, we are fulfilling God’s command to “be still and know that I am God” and to “wait upon him.” It is when we are still before the Lord that our knowledge, intimacy, and relationship with Him can grow.

There is limited knowledge concerning the history of meditation, but some researchers think that meditation could have been discovered when people sat at campsite fires thousands of years ago and looked at the flames. This theory goes well with the known fact that staring at a candle flame can induce one type of meditation. As time passed different forms of it were developed. Books from India called tantras speak of this type of prayer as far back as five thousand years ago. Archaeologists discovered a statue of a yogi in the Indus Valley Civilization and this shows that meditation in the practice of yoga could be as ancient as the first Indian civilization.

Buddha was a big advocate of meditation. He became established as a teacher about 500 B.C. His ideas were stretched into various Asian countries and in other places people created different forms of meditation based on his teachings. In Islam the Sufi tradition of meditation was purported and the leaders (Sufis) think that when Mohamed began Islam that is when meditation started with that religion. Meditation is part of Christianity, Jainism, Judaism, and aboriginal religions.

Zen Buddhism is a philosophy that advocates meditating to discover the meaning of life. Zen came from Buddhism and it has spawned Taoism, Confucianism, and Indian spiritualism. Mindfulness Meditation – How to Slay Your Inner Dragon

The ability of mindfulness meditation to reduce stress is well-documented, and has led to its widespread instruction in the worlds of medicine, psychiatry, and business. But another key benefit of mindfulness is its tendency to promote a more positive outlook on life. We can take advantage of this by reminding ourselves everyday to cultivate awareness in the present moment. And we must, for we are fighting a constant battle against primitive regions of the brain that are hard-wired for negativity.

To Slay the Dragon, One Must First Be Aware of Him….

Well, it’s not quite a dragon that we’re concerned with – more like a lizard. Our evolutionary ancestor has left us an unwelcome gift. As the neuropsychologist Dr. Rick Hanson has explained, our minds are “like Velcro for negative experiences and like Teflon for positive ones.” The most primitive areas of the brain – structures that pre-date later mammals and primates – are concerned above all else with matters of survival and the perception of threats. Any bad experience must be remembered to ensure that there is no repeat; in other words, once bitten, twice shy. The amygdala and hippocampus are primed to assign negative emotions to perceived threats and retain them, so that any future experience resembling them will be labeled the same way and evoke a similar response. And unfortunately, that primitive alarm system is still sounding off in us millions of years after it evolved.

How Mindfulness Meditation Changes Our Brain and Our Emotions

Numerous studies have shown that mindfulness meditation makes practitioners more likely to see neutral experiences in a positive light, and less likely to dwell on the negative. The reason for this change in what psychologists call “positive affect” is a rewiring of the brain’s prefrontal cortex, favoring the left side over the right side. This brings a trend away from depression and anxiety and toward happiness, relaxation, and emotional balance. There is also a discernible improvement in the functioning of the immune system, perhaps because this is one of the systems so adversely affected by stress hormones, which are now better regulated. In other words, meditation allows us to slay that inner dragon!

Toward A More Evolved Awareness

With the deck stacked against us by biology, we must make a determined effort to practice mindfulness, not just during distinct meditation sessions, but throughout the day. Dr. Hanson recommends setting a daily goal to notice beauty in the world, goodness in other people, and times when our everyday needs are being satisfied, such as meals. Ponder the feeling of being loved by family or friends; feel the strength of your body as you walk; be grateful for shelter in the rain. Instead of allowing these oft-ignored positive experiences to flash by, dwell on them for an extended period, and really soak up the positive feelings. Over time, this manner of thinking will become habitual, and will gradually retrain your brain to look for and expect the good. And if you hear a voice telling you that such awareness exercises are silly, tell that little lizard to shut up. There’s a more highly evolved creature in charge now!
