Take a fifteen minute walk on your lunch break, if you sit at your desk all the time, or walk around the house for a while if you are on the couch the whole time. Walking and doing things will also help with stress relief because it will stop you from thinking about things while you think about what you are doing. On the other hand, it can give you time to work out a problem, if that is what you need.

Out of the Hindu tradition comes Yogic meditation, which is also purely concentrative. The traditional basic exercises consist of focusing the mind on a single object: a stone, a candle flame, a syllable or whatever, and not allowing it to wander. Having acquired the basic skill, the Yogi proceeds to expand his practice by taking on more complex objects of meditation: chants, colourful religious images, energy channels in the body and so forth. Still, no matter how complex the object of meditation, the meditation itself remains purely an exercise in concentration.

Given the large number and diversity of traditional Buddhist meditation practices, this article primarily identifies authoritative contextual frameworks.

An example of this would be if you decided to focus on love. To start, you would relax your body, sit in a comfortable position, calm your emotions and begin repeating the word “love” over and over. The problem is that your mind has been your master your whole life and won’t easily relinquish its position. To trick you back into obedient slavery, your mind will divert your attention, often by giving you a tantalizingly interesting distraction. What you are supposed to do is to witness your being distracted and return to concentrating on the object of your meditation. Concentration is well worth persevering in and ultimately liberating, spectacular and a blessing.

For a long time people considered meditation as an esoteric subject of elderly which deserved a try only after retirement. Thankfully, the situation is changing fast. Now there are management schools where meditation is taught as a compulsory subject. The classes of meditation are being conducted in every part of the world. The most modern doctors of world’s best health institutions are recommending the daily practice of meditation to their patients.

Now meditation is globally recognized as an essential tool for stress reduction and mental peace. As more and more people recognize their true identity through meditation, there will be an increase in the awareness to recognize the presence of same supreme consciousness in everybody.

The Vajrayana tradition has developed a practice that makes it possible to go through this process much more quickly than other meditation practices. In this practice one prays to one’s guru and to all the gurus that have come before and develops a very strong devotion–an openness to receive their blessings. If one prays to the gurus, one receives the blessing, and through this blessing one’s meditation progresses rapidly and naturally.

Back to Basics – Luminate Festival 2012

Luminate, a weeklong festival to celebrate the 2,000 year old summer harvest festival known as Lughnasadgh halfway between the summer solstice and autumn equinox, a time of abundant crops, a happy time celebrated with merry making and food to give thanks to Mother Earth for her largess. The 2012 event held from 1st to 12th February was the 5th year of commemoration of this earth friendly festival of music, dance, art and culture, knowledge sharing and creativity underlined by sustainability and respecting the environment.

The most popular part of the festival, the music zone featured day and night performances of some of the most diverse live and electronic genres in music. The line-up of musicians from New Zealand and abroad represented world grooves, gypsy, soul, minimal tech, tribal rhythms, dub, folk, D&B among a host of other genres. Festival goers grooved to the rhythms of their preferred music on two amplified dance floors and listened to their favourite beats on five stages. Some brought instruments and weres part of the action in the Acoustic Jam Space.

The fantastic array of activities included Knowledge and Inspiration Sharing Sessions, KISS for short, which was a series of workshops focusing on an array of holistic, environmental and cultural topics highlighting sustainability, self reliance and skills transfer.

The Juggle Poi Toy Zone hosted classes on all sorts of skills associated with the circus such as juggling, hoola hoop whirling, poi, stilt walking, slacklining and fire dancing. The Healing Hub taught classes on massages, reiki, a range of natural therapies, yoga and meditation. The Tribal Zone hosted classes on African drumming, performing on native instruments, dance and movement and much more with a backdrop of organic sculptures. The Busker’s Stage, a platform for anyone to perform, hosted performers who gave vent to their creative musical skills.

Food and beverages at the festival were organically and sourced locally and was mostly vegetarian. There was also an arts and crafts market, movies and documentaries with a purpose and children’s activities.

Taking place on top of Taka Hill surrounded by a 200 acre pristine landscape, the festival ground featured earth friendly amenities such as solar showers, composting toilets and other techniques in conserving resources and minimizing waste. The site had no trash bins and did not recycle waste and instead festival goers carried all their rubbish back! Food and drink were served on ceramic ware brought by the participants as customary. A composting facility for biodegradables and an area for dishwashing were also on site. The no alcohol policy provided a safe and relaxed environment to have fun and garner knowledge.

Simple Yoga Routine for Terrible Back Pains

Back pains take many forms, sometimes harmless, but most of the time terrible and dangerous. All the same, both shouldn’t be ignored. Causes of backache include rigidity of the muscles in the back and feeble abdominal muscles. Also, lifestyle may also contribute to backaches; constant strenuous work without a daily exercise is one example. Poor body posture may cause the back muscles to constrict, thus, resulting to back pains.

One sure way of preventing back ailments is through Yoga. Yoga is an Indian word which means “union”. It is a form of exercise combining different patterns for breathing and several routines for the body to achieve a more peaceful and healthier mind. Benefits from Yoga are countless; practicing it doesn’t only help the mind, but it also aids in improving the body as well.

Abdominal and back muscles are some of the most important muscles in the body. They make up the spine, which is essential in body movements and in keeping a proper upright posture. If the body maintains the correct posture, prevention can be assured. These muscles can be strengthened by practicing Yoga. Yoga offers different postures such as the Cobra, which is the easiest and most popular routine. The principle behind this is to imitate the animal’s posture. To execute this routine, first, lay down on your stomach with the arms stretched on the ground above the head. Relax your body and keep your elbows out. Then, mimic the Cobra’s posture by slowly raising your body. This posture should form an arch on your back, so that your abdominal muscles stretch while the back muscles relax. Keep this posture for 10-15 seconds, then, slowly move the upper part of your body to the ground. Regularly performing this routine will help in preventing possible injuries in the future.

For backaches, it’s best to exercise your body, even if it’s painful, rather than resting it or taking medications. Practicing exercise routines will give you long-term solutions for back pains. Be sure to ask for recommendations from medical experts before performing any Yoga routine.
