This year I just managed to get in a week of FLOW skiing in the Dolomites at the end of the season. It was a rather special week because it was also a meditation retreat. We would begin the day with meditation and balancing exercises, and after a delicious alpine breakfast we would go out on deserted, pristine slopes. Our hotel, at an altitude of 2054m, was only accessible by snowmobile and directly on a piste, so we would have some of the best slopes to ourselves for the first few hours every day. Our instructor and group leader Bruhn, was a very enlightened fellow and had a very unique approach to skiing: being in the FLOW.

However, while it takes humility to have a beginners mind and to focus on the basics, the results are fascinating.

From professional footballers and musicians doing regular practice, to the most successful entrepreneurs who analyse people’s behaviour to spot the gaps in the market, there is an ultra focussed awareness. Because every time we do something with full awareness of the smallest nuance and distinction, we can begin to notice the difference that makes a difference.

Practicing Flow and Flow in PracticeWhat are the basics that you need to focus on? What skills, if you perfected them, would make the biggest difference to your business? For me it’s been a lot about Marketing and finding the simplest ways to present and implement robust HR Strategies that really drive performance without bogging managers down in bureaucracy. It’s very exciting to achieve sell-out Seminars and produce popular products like my new DVD sets, but it is also a huge stretch out of my comfort zone and into the learning zone. In his excellent Book ‘Flow: the psychology of optimal experience’ he discusses the need for a tension between our level of Skill and Challenge. Too much challenge with not enough skill will lead to anxiety, stress and burn out. Too much skill with not enough challenge leads to boredom, complacency and apathy. Searching for, and finding the balance between the two is all about ‘being in the Flow’.

So what do you need to practice in order to transform your business? What skills do you need to improve so you relish the challenges? And what challenges do you need to seek out to motivate you to practice? It’s not about making life more difficult, it’s about finding the optimum balance that brings deep satisfaction and fulfilment from recognising that it’s often by focussing on the little things, that great things can be achieved.

By the end of the week of Flow Skiing I was able to carve (parallel skiing on the inside edge of the skis) through the soft slushy snow at the bottom of the slopes and to make quick short-turns if I encountered larger mounds of snow. These mounds used to terrify me and ruin my day. Now they had become an interesting challenge to overcome by coordinating hundreds of micro movements (and some major ones!). Back to Basics – Luminate Festival 2012

Luminate, a weeklong festival to celebrate the 2,000 year old summer harvest festival known as Lughnasadgh halfway between the summer solstice and autumn equinox, a time of abundant crops, a happy time celebrated with merry making and food to give thanks to Mother Earth for her largess. The 2012 event held from 1st to 12th February was the 5th year of commemoration of this earth friendly festival of music, dance, art and culture, knowledge sharing and creativity underlined by sustainability and respecting the environment.

The most popular part of the festival, the music zone featured day and night performances of some of the most diverse live and electronic genres in music. The line-up of musicians from New Zealand and abroad represented world grooves, gypsy, soul, minimal tech, tribal rhythms, dub, folk, D&B among a host of other genres. Festival goers grooved to the rhythms of their preferred music on two amplified dance floors and listened to their favourite beats on five stages. Some brought instruments and weres part of the action in the Acoustic Jam Space.

The fantastic array of activities included Knowledge and Inspiration Sharing Sessions, KISS for short, which was a series of workshops focusing on an array of holistic, environmental and cultural topics highlighting sustainability, self reliance and skills transfer.

The Juggle Poi Toy Zone hosted classes on all sorts of skills associated with the circus such as juggling, hoola hoop whirling, poi, stilt walking, slacklining and fire dancing. The Healing Hub taught classes on massages, reiki, a range of natural therapies, yoga and meditation. The Tribal Zone hosted classes on African drumming, performing on native instruments, dance and movement and much more with a backdrop of organic sculptures. The Busker’s Stage, a platform for anyone to perform, hosted performers who gave vent to their creative musical skills.

Food and beverages at the festival were organically and sourced locally and was mostly vegetarian. There was also an arts and crafts market, movies and documentaries with a purpose and children’s activities.

Taking place on top of Taka Hill surrounded by a 200 acre pristine landscape, the festival ground featured earth friendly amenities such as solar showers, composting toilets and other techniques in conserving resources and minimizing waste. The site had no trash bins and did not recycle waste and instead festival goers carried all their rubbish back! Food and drink were served on ceramic ware brought by the participants as customary. A composting facility for biodegradables and an area for dishwashing were also on site. The no alcohol policy provided a safe and relaxed environment to have fun and garner knowledge.

We search for all of the things outside of ourselves that we think are going to bring us joy. We forget that all the love, joy and peace we could ever imagine lives right inside of ourselves. That is why we meditate to connect with spirit and the joy in our hearts. There are many ways to meditate. One popular style is silent meditation, sitting in silence and focus inwardly or towards God. You can meditate while listening to a guided visualization; this is a great way to use the power of words to bring you into a good feeling. There are many meditations that use matras (words or sounds repeated) and mudras (hand positions that guide reflexes to the brain). Pranyama’s are breathing exercises that fill your body with Prana (life force energy). Many Kundalini Yoga meditations bring pranayama, mudras and mantras all together to create an experience of higher consciousness. I have noticed that I am able to stay more focused in my meditations with I bring my attention to a certain place in my body. Try bringing your attention to your third eye point, the dark space in between your eyebrows helps to activate your intuition. The third eye point is your center for intuition. You can also bring your attention to your heart chakra allowing love to expand through it. Two other powerful places are the center of your head which allows you to take back your power and be senior in your body. The higher mind is two inches back and up from the center of your head, this space I have noticed makes me feel heightened awareness. Meditation practice it is all about the experience. Work through it with awareness; try different mantras, mudrahs and bringing your awareness to different places to see what the results are for you. You can’t do it wrong. Many people believe that they cannot meditate because they cannot get there mind to quiet down. Even many masters of meditation still have thoughts come up, that you cannot control. Be aware while being gentle with yourself. Know that if you have a thought or thoughts that it is okay you are doing the best you can. The more your practice the more aware you will become and the quieter your mind will be. I enjoy using words in my meditations and allowing them to come into feelings. Right now think of the word joy and take three deep breaths allowing joy to spread to every cell in your body. Next use the word love and allow yourself to truly feel the love in your heart and as you breathe let that feeling of love spread to every cell in your body. It is our thoughts and feelings that create our reality. Though meditation you can create more joy and love within yourself.
