The history of Reiki reveals the story of magical healing energies which were rediscovered by a man named Dr Mikao Usui, a Buddhist monk in the early nineteenth century. Dr Usui found the “key” for healing using only energy and the palm of your hand. His amazing quest to find the missing “keys” of healing has now been widely spread all over the world, and used daily by millions of people..

A senior student asked Dr Usui, “Do you believe everything written in the bible?” Dr Usui answered “yes”. The boy then proceeded to ask “Why does it say in the bible that we can walk on water and heal sick people, when we can’t”.

This was the seed that started the quest for answers and Dr Usui resigned from his position. He moved to the United States of America and received a Doctorate Degree in Scriptures.

Dr Usui knew Buddha had the power to heal, so he returned to Japan to study Buddhism.

Whilst studying Buddhism he discovered the Original Buddhist Scriptures, but unfortunately they were written in Sanskrit (an ancient language). Which he had to study before he was able to understand the teachings.

Finally, he found the formula of how Buddha miraculously healed people. He knew he was close but could still not heal people. Dr Usui went to the mountains in Japan to fast and meditate on the technique required to heal people for 21 days. His friend the Abbot warned him it could be very dangerous, and he may even loose his life.

As Dr Usui climbed the scared mountain he collected twenty one stones, that he used as a calendar. He spent his days on the mountains studying the sutras, meditating and singing. As the days passed Dr Usui became tired, stiff, hungry, thirsty and exhausted and disappointed as he was no closer to discovering how to heal the sick.

On the twenty first day as Dr Usui began to head home, then suddenly he became aware of a beautiful beam of white light shooting from the heavens directly towards him.

He was stuck by this light which eventually knocked him over, he could also see bubbles of white light before his eyes.

These bubbles of light contained the energies of Reiki. He realized the missing key’s of Reiki had been given to him, and the missing energies or the now known symbols of Reiki healing, had been rediscovered.

Following this experience Dr Usui was no longer feeling the tiredness, stiffness, exhaustion and hunger he previously felt. On the way down the mountain he stubbed his toe which he placed his hands over and the pain and bleeding subsided. He healed himself.

When he arrived down from the mountain he stopped at an inn and ordered a Japanese breakfast. The inn keeper could see he had been through an ordeal by his clothes and appearance.

Whilst waiting for breakfast he healed the inn keeper’s daughter of tooth ache. He also healed himself of aches and pains plus his friend at the Monastery the Abbot, of severe arthritic pain using only energy and his hands.

He continued to heal the poor and the beggars for many years. Eventually left the beggars and returned home to the Monastery, where he began healing and teaching students throughout Japan.

Dr Usui now realized there were two primary aspects of healing which were vital- the healing of the spirit and the responsibility of the receiver.

Dr Usui passed the “Keys”, the lineage and the history of Reiki onto 16 students including Chujiro Hyashi, Hakayo Tagata and Phyllis Furimoto who in return passed the Reiki lineage on to thousands of students, so his teachings were never lost again.

Perhaps as ancient as the Bible itself, the history of meditation has been recorded going back thousands of years. While no accurate data exists on its origination, many speculate on its roots.

The Buddha has been long recognized as an icon in the history of meditation; dating back to 500 B.C. After living a luxurious life in his early years with his father, Siddhartha became familiar with the realities of life outside of his upbringing. He determined that life was mired with sorrow and suffering, and declared abstinence from worldly pleasures to pursue more spiritual goals. Upon discovering that the opposite end of the scale he chose was not the answer to end life’s suffering, he instead traversed to the middle ground between luxury and asceticism. Siddhartha was 30 years old when he found “enlightenment”, or Nirvana; a heightened level of awareness attained through meditation. He spent the remainder of his lifetime teaching his methods to many people, gaining a following of thousands of individuals.

Teachings from the Buddha spread through the Eastern world in many different forms. Since there was no formal set of guidelines, the adoption of the teachings in diverse areas branched out to form many doctrines over the next 400 years. Even so, several thousands of years still passed before the Western world learned of the history of meditation and all of its principles.

Researchers who have spent years studying the history of meditation have also learned that its practice was documented by Indians, although called Tantra by these people. Historical theories include that meditation and varying states of consciousness were achieved by ancestral people who would focus on flames in campfires, transcending their thoughts into ideals and plans of action.

Meditation as it exists today also takes many forms; likely through its loose formation and development in early years after the Buddha’s teachings ceased. Each variation is as valuable and effective for its followers as the next, serving to balance emotional and physical energies of the body and mind. The history of meditation has evolved into a technique that can help people sleep, overcome depression, eliminate stress and anxiety and achieve overall peace of mind. It has also been essential in assisting individuals in conquering illnesses such as smoking, weight, drug issues and alcoholism. For many, meditation is a means of dealing with the everyday pressures that the world imposes; centering them and helping them to regain composure and joy in their life.

While it is true that no one knows how far back the history of meditation extends, it is known that the art has developed over time into one of the most practiced techniques in the world. Books, lectures, seminars and classes that teach the methods of meditation are available to all who seek inner peace; the same goal sought by millions throughout the history of meditation.

Meditation is a spiritual practice that dates back to many, many years ago. In fact, some evidence found by archaeologists even points to the practice dating back to nearly 3,000 years ago when the first Indian civilizations were in existence. There are many different forms of meditation and the different techniques are practiced by various religions as well as individual only looking for relaxation or a higher spiritual consciousness within themselves. There is limited knowledge concerning the history of meditation, but some researchers think that meditation could have been discovered when people sat at campsite fires thousands of years ago and looked at the flames. This theory goes well with the known fact that staring at a candle flame can induce one type of meditation. As time passed different forms of it were developed. Books from India called tantras speak of this type of prayer as far back as five thousand years ago. Archaeologists discovered a statue of a yogi in the Indus Valley Civilization and this shows that meditation in the practice of yoga could be as ancient as the first Indian civilization.

Buddha was a big advocate of meditation. He became established as a teacher about 500 B.C. His ideas were stretched into various Asian countries and in other places people created different forms of meditation based on his teachings. In Islam the Sufi tradition of meditation was purported and the leaders (Sufis) think that when Mohamed began Islam that is when meditation started with that religion. Meditation is part of Christianity, Jainism, Judaism, and aboriginal religions.

Zen Buddhism is a philosophy that advocates meditating to discover the meaning of life. Zen came from Buddhism and it has spawned Taoism, Confucianism, and Indian spiritualism. Taoism basically means the way. It began as a philosophy but ended up as a religion. Taoist meditation concentrates on stopping outward sensory information from coming into your mind.
