Meditation Breathing :

In this part 2 Bhante Vimalaramsi explains the difference between how the breathing meditation is taught in the Suttas and how it is taught by Vipassana and other teachers. How does the Relax step function to make your progress so much faster. And how only by practicing in this way Craving is destroyed and the Hindrances are let go of rather than suppressed as they are in One Point Concentration/Absorption. He also tells a story about a man who was a long time practicer of Vipassana taught by Mahasi Sayadaw who succeeded at that meditation and progressed through the various 16 knowledges or but started doing the meditation with Bhante’s guidance and had amazing breathroughs into insights and states never before experienced. And all without needing to do a retreat but just with a daily practice. The experiences are exactly as written about in the Majjhima Nikaya or Samyutta Nikaya -NOT the Visuddhi Magga which is now see to be a commentary not written or spoken by the Buddha but re-interpreted by scholar monks who did no meditation and were influenced by Hindu Practices. Back Pain and Meditation Part 6

Article by Glen Wood – The Yoga Teacher

Back Pain and Meditation Part 6

The transitions between sitting and standing in this method are an opportunity to practice meditation in action. Meditation must not be thought of as something that is only done in a physically rigid state, far removed from the world of work and play. The goal is to become meditative continuously, so that your very being becomes cosmically conscious permanently and irrevocably. When you stand up and sit down during meditation sessions, feel the inner flow of meditation continue. Observe that your body is moving, but your basic existential identity remains the same.

When one meditates, do it for a short time; but do it again and again and again. The whole point is to develop a habit of meditation. If one meditates at first for too long, the mind just becomes more and more agitated and difficult to control. If one meditates for a short time and renews the session many times, then each time the mind will be fresh and clear and able to settle down more easily. So meditate again and again until the habit of meditation grows stronger.

Sahaja Yoga is a unique method of meditation based on an experience called Self Realization (Kundalini awakening) that can occur within each human being. Through this process an inner transformation takes place by which one becomes moral, united, integrated and balanced. One can actually feel the all pervading divine power as a cool breeze, as described in all religions and spiritual traditions of the world. This is the actualization of such transformation, which is taking place now, worldwide, and has been proved and experienced by hundreds of thousands in over 90 countries

In the process of exploring these universal concepts in the privacy of your own inner world through meditation, you will come to a first hand awareness of the interconnectedness of the human family and the rights, roles and responsibilities of individuals. This is very important in your spiritual development and will give you a fresh perspective on values such as justice, freedom, respect and love.

Sahaja Yoga Meditation is best understood as a state of ‘mental silence’ in which one is fully alert and aware but free of the unnecessary thoughts or worries that lead to many of life’s day to day stresses. This state of silence occurs spontaneously when one learns how to focus on the experience of the present moment, leading to a state of peace and calm. Through a simple process, known as Self-Realisation (kundalini awakening) this meditative state can be quickly established, maintained and, most importantly, enjoyed!

Back Pain and Meditation Part 2

There is no set date when this great ancient art-science began, but it goes back thousands of years. Stone carvings in the Indus Valley depicting yoga postures date back over 5,000 years. Traditionally, yoga was a spiritual practice, its goal being union with the Absolute or Divine. The various exercises associated with Hatha Yoga were performed to prepare the body for long periods of meditation. The word yoga means to join or unite together, and the practice joins together the body, mind, and spirit. The practice is often associated with Hinduism, but pre-dates the religion. As have other religions, Hinduism has incorporated elements of this art into its practices.

After you consult with your doctor find a good yoga instructor. Getting a referral from someone you trust would be helpful. Make sure that they practice traditional forms of yoga brought out of India that will teach you meditation as well as physical poses.

Posture, balance and body alignment through yoga. The yoga poses are meant to train the body to be healthy and supple. Consistent practice and application will result in improved posture, and an increased sense of balance, with head, shoulders and pelvis in proper alignment. Additionally, unlike many other forms of exercise, yoga helps stretch and strengthens both sides of the body equally.

The practice of yoga focuses on body alignment and awareness, in the belief that every part of the body has an effect on every other part, as well as the body as a whole. Practicing the poses teaches balance, patience and perseverance while toning and strengthening the muscles.By consciously combining specific methods of breath, movement, stretching, meditation, mantras and relaxation, this practice promotes amazing immediate results and insures lasting long term physical, emotional and spiritual benefits. Kundalini Yoga helps you look great, feel great, relax, enjoy life and live in grace and gratitude.

These Yoga meditation techniques have been used for centuries for spiritual purposes. However, they can also be used as natural pain relief methods. By applying the meditation techniques specifically for pain control, practitioners are able to have a positive effect on such severe kinds of pain.

This deepening of awareness is carried out while practicing gentle asanas at the beginning and keeping the awareness inward focusing on how one’s being feels. This is far from many of the Asana Yoga classes which often try to make sure the body is in 100% correct alignment, and focus on how the body looks or appears from the outside in an asana.

Meditation and Abundance, Part I – The Uses and Limits of Mindfulness Approaches

Article by Richard M. Frost

It might seem odd to associate meditation with materialistic concerns about wealth and abundance. Isn’t meditation supposed to be a spiritual pursuit that takes us above such worldly matters? While it certainly can be purely spiritual, meditation has become linked to abundance in the New Age movement because it addresses control over our minds, and what we do with our minds is believed to affect what happens in our lives. The extent to which one believes in the power of the mind dictates the type of meditative practice one will employ. In this first article in a three-part series, we look at the approach taken by those who can’t quite bring themselves to fully accept this power.

The Minimalist Approach – Applied Mindfulness

Mindfulness practices aim to cultivate present-moment awareness, with the ultimate goal of teaching us that we have a choice over the contents of our own minds and, consequently, the way that we feel as we ride the ups and downs that life throws at us. The Buddha taught that suffering is inevitable, but the way we react to it is not.

From a New Age perspective, the problem with Buddhist mindfulness is its failure to tell us that we create our realities with our thoughts and emotions. Mindfulness techniques are wonderful ways to reduce stress, and have been shown to boost immune function and positive attitudes, but they do little to empower you. They can change the way you feel, but they do not take the next step and explain how feelings have creative power outside the self.

Thus, the kinds of exercises that are sometimes prescribed by mindfulness practitioners, like Dr. Rick Hanson, are all about making you feel more abundant, but not about making you have more abundance. We are told to feel grateful for all the things we have right now, and to notice and appreciate simple everyday things that we typically take completely for granted, like the air we breathe and the food we eat. Dr. Hanson’s approach, combining evolutionary neuroscience with Buddhism, tries to satisfy primitive structures within the brain that are almost permanently afraid of not having enough to survive.

The Limits of Mindfulness Methods

There is much to be said for this approach, but it can be seen as simply managing the symptoms of the disease rather than curing it – a kind of palliative care for the impoverished soul. And, rather ironically, by ignoring the very real creative power of emotions, mindfulness practitioners are actually selling themselves short. It is possible to generate significant feelings of plenty from these simple exercises, and those feelings can work magic in your outer reality. But none of that is acknowledged because most of these practitioners aren’t willing to join that segment of the New Age movement which believes in a much greater power of the mind.

In the next article, we will remedy that defect and take a step toward fully embracing the true power of our minds over our lives. But before moving on, I want to emphasize that mindfulness practices should not be ignored. In fact, because they are so simple and can be used to generate feelings of abundance even when the chips are down (we always have air to breathe!), they should be seen as a basic weapon in our never-ending battle against poverty-consciousness. Moreover, mindfulness is an essential quality for anyone seeking to understand the connection between inner and outer reality, for without awareness you have absolutely no chance of ever being able to control your mind well enough to control your life.
