The basics of meditation

Article by Hillary Pike

Hillary Pike on Meditation

Meditation is a process of going inward and connecting with your true self. There are so many different ways to meditate. I want to share with some of my favorite types of meditation, and how they can help you. Yogananda said “The soul loves to meditate for in connection with the spirit lies its greatest joy.” The most joyful experiences in my life have been in meditation connecting with spirit. We as humans are training that we need so many things to be happy, such as; the perfect relationship, car, career, home and friends. We search for all of the things outside of ourselves that we think are going to bring us joy. We forget that all the love, joy and peace we could ever imagine lives right inside of ourselves. That is why we meditate to connect with spirit and the joy in our hearts. There are many ways to meditate. One popular style is silent meditation, sitting in silence and focus inwardly or towards God. You can meditate while listening to a guided visualization; this is a great way to use the power of words to bring you into a good feeling. There are many meditations that use matras (words or sounds repeated) and mudras (hand positions that guide reflexes to the brain). Pranyama’s are breathing exercises that fill your body with Prana (life force energy). Many Kundalini Yoga meditations bring pranayama, mudras and mantras all together to create an experience of higher consciousness. I have noticed that I am able to stay more focused in my meditations with I bring my attention to a certain place in my body. Try bringing your attention to your third eye point, the dark space in between your eyebrows helps to activate your intuition. The third eye point is your center for intuition. You can also bring your attention to your heart chakra allowing love to expand through it. Two other powerful places are the center of your head which allows you to take back your power and be senior in your body. The higher mind is two inches back and up from the center of your head, this space I have noticed makes me feel heightened awareness. Meditation practice it is all about the experience. Work through it with awareness; try different mantras, mudrahs and bringing your awareness to different places to see what the results are for you. You can’t do it wrong. Many people believe that they cannot meditate because they cannot get there mind to quiet down. Even many masters of meditation still have thoughts come up, that you cannot control. Be aware while being gentle with yourself. Know that if you have a thought or thoughts that it is okay you are doing the best you can. The more your practice the more aware you will become and the quieter your mind will be. I enjoy using words in my meditations and allowing them to come into feelings. Right now think of the word joy and take three deep breaths allowing joy to spread to every cell in your body. Next use the word love and allow yourself to truly feel the love in your heart and as you breathe let that feeling of love spread to every cell in your body. It is our thoughts and feelings that create our reality. Though meditation you can create more joy and love within yourself.

Grieving and Forgiveness in Midlife

Article by Gail Feldman

On the Heroine’s Journey we’re tossed out of our comfort zone, dragged down the road of trials, nearly drowned in the “belly of the whale,” provided with supernatural aide, to eventually find the treasure at the end of our travels and return to a transformed life in order to share our wisdom with others. Whew! It’s not surprising that we don’t consciously choose to take on this heart-rattling adventure. But it’s helpful to believe that unconsciously, we’ve been a part of the design team for our greatest growth and development.

There may be times on your journey through midlife, as there were on mine, when you believe the darkness will never end–when loneliness feels like you’ve been separated-out and banished from the tribe; when pain, physical or emotional, is so deep and intense it feels impossible to handle; when confusion reigns and the tentacles of fear blind you from having a positive vision for the future. This is your wisdom initiation–to experience the underworld of feelings–the grief that will allow you to shed your old identities, to re-create and re-establish and re-birth yourself. Midlife is the time to stand in the world with full power, creativity and wisdom. The old self must give way to the new.

I believe grief is the gift we’ve been given to process feelings that could literally kill us. Be aware of the various feeling stages of grief (not that we necessarily experience all of them or in some proper order) so that you have a context or a supportive structure to honor this time of transformation–to know that your feelings are giving you important messages about your thoughts and beliefs. These sometimes hidden beliefs can keep you stuck on your path, or with awareness, open the door to move forward with guidance and resolve.

The phases of grief that Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross taught were Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. Dr. Kubler-Ross was dealing with dying cancer patients, so I’ve adapted or expanded her terms to apply to every type of loss and disappointment. For example, during the initial shock of realizing a serious reversal in life, there are two other mental mechanisms in addition to denial that we use to buffer ourselves from traumas that could overwhelm us if the full impact were immediately felt: disbelief and dissociation are ways we go numb to a new reality that we’re not yet able to face. The stage of Bargaining I’ve changed to Obsession, as compulsive ruminations often rule the day when the mind is attempting to master a crisis of seemingly overwhelming proportions. Know that every deep dark feeling reflects a capacity for love and lightness.

So be in tune with where your time is spent: Is it in denial and disbelief, anger, depression, obsession, anxiety? Give yourself permission to be with the emotions (or lack of emotions.) Don’t judge yourself. Just notice the feelings. Write about them in your journal. Know that as you practice observing and documenting your feelings, you are honoring yourself and moving the energy to clear the system for gradual renewal and regeneration. Creativity isn’t often linked with grief, but clearing energy to allow your signature self-expression or even your life purpose to emerge is a creative act. And who knows what you might discover?

A new level of self-compassion is called for during this time. We bring compassion so easily to others, but now, we must soothe our “inner children”– reassure them that we can handle the life before us without ignoring or risking our own wellbeing. Find ways to bring more calmness and peace into your life. Schedule short times each day for meditation, breathing, prayer, or walks in nature. Establish rituals for releasing your grief, like burning special candles at special times, making journal entries about your feelings, and I encourage you to write about forgiveness– forgiving yourself or another person for hurting or “abandoning” you. Be mindful that the word “forgive” in Aramaic means to “untie a knot.” In anger or resentment, we are tied-up in knots, or remain tied to the other person. Choose to release the negative attachment and free yourself.

Consider a gratitude practice in order to focus on what you do have and what is working in your life. Gratefulness allows for the most important aspect of resilience to emerge and bring power and purpose to your life: optimism. The more present and grateful you are, the more you can accept life just as it is now, and at the same time, feel hope and possibility for the future.

Learn a Unique Technique of Meditation.

Article by James Brown

This meditation technique is quite different from the conventional meditation techniques. This technique is actually a contemplation exercise and involves thinking over life. Though people of all age can try this technique, it is basically suitable for people with mature age (I mean 18 & above). The reason is that only those who have lived a certain (substantial) duration of life can reflect back on their past. Very young people who are still in the initial phase of their life are less likely (though not impossible) to analyze their life from the angle which this meditation demands. Nevertheless, this meditation technique is very useful for knowing our true self.

Method:

First read this thought provoking story:-

Once a king called upon all of his wise men and asked them,

“Is there a mantra or suggestion which works in every situation, in every circumstance, in every place and in every time. Something which can help me when none of you are available to advise me. Tell me is there any mantra?”

All wise men got puzzled by King’s question. One answer for all questions? Something that works everywhere, in every situation? In every joy every sorrow, every defeat and every victory? They thought and thought. After a lengthy discussion, an old man suggested something which appeals to all of them. They went to king and gave him something written on paper. But the condition was that king was not to see it out of curiosity. Only in extreme danger, when the King finds himself alone and there seems to be no way, only then he’ll have to see it. The King put the papers under his Diamond ring.

After a few days, the neighbors attack the Kingdom. It was a collective surprise attack of King’s enemies. King and his army fought bravely but lost the battle. King had to flee on his horse. The enemies were following him. His horse took him far away in Jungle. He could hear many troops of horses were following him and the noise was coming closer and closer. Suddenly the King found he standing in the end of the road – that road was not going anywhere. Underneath there was a rocky valley thousand feet deep. If he jumped into it, he would be finished…and he could not return because it was a small road…From back the sound of enemy’s horses was approaching fast. King became restless. There seemed to be no way.

Then suddenly he saw the Diamond in his ring shining in the sun, and he remembered the message hidden in the ring. He opened the diamond and read the message. The message was very small but very great.

The message was – “This too will pass.”

The King read it. Again read it. Suddenly something strike in his mind- Yes! It too will pass. Only a few days ago, I was enjoying my kingdom. I was the mightiest of all the Kings. Yet today, the Kingdom and all his pleasure have gone. I am here trying to escape from enemies. However when those days of luxuries have gone, this day of danger too will pass. Calm come on his face. He kept standing there. The place where he was standing was full of natural beauty. He had never known that such a beautiful place was also a part of his Kingdom. The revelation of message had a great effect on him. He relaxed and forget about those following him. After a few minute he realized that the noise of the horses and the enemy coming was receding. They moved into some other part of the mountains and were not on that path.

The King was very brave. He reorganized his army and fought again. He defeated the enemy and regains his lost empire. When he returned to his empire after victory, he was received with much fan fare at the door. The whole capital was rejoicing in the victory. Everyone was in a festive mood. Flowers were being thrown on King from every house, from every corner. People were dancing and singing. For a moment King said to himself,” I am one of the bravest and greatest King. It is not easy to defeat Me.: With all the reception and celebration he saw an ego emerging in him.

Suddenly the Diamond of his ring flashed in the sunlight and reminded him of the message. He opens it and read it again: “This too will pass”

He became silent. His face went through a total change -from the egoist he moved to a state of utter humbleness.

If this too is going to pass, it is not yours. The defeat was not yours, the victory is not yours. You are just a watcher. Everything passes by

We are witness of all this. We are the perceiver. Life come and goes. Happiness come and goes. Sorrow come and goes.

Now as you have read this story, just sit silently and evaluate your own life. This too will pass. Think of the moments of joy and victory in your life. Think of the moment of Sorrow and defeat. Are they permanent? They all come and pass away. Life just passes away.

There were friends in past. They all have gone. There are friends today. They too will go.There will be new friends tomorrow. They too will go.

There were enemies in past. They have gone. There may be enemy in present. They too will go.There will be new enemies tomorrow and……they too will go.

There is nothing permanent in this world. Every thing changes except the law of change. Think over it from your own perspective. You have seen all the changes. You have survived all setbacks, all defeats and all sorrows. All have passed away. If there are problems in the present, they too will pass away. Because nothing remains forever. Joy and sorrow are the two faces of the same coin. They both will pass away. Who are you in reality? Know your real face. Your face is not your true face. It will change with the time. However, there is something in you, which will not change. It will remain unchanged. What is that unchangeable? It is nothing but your true self.

You are just a witness of change. Experience it, understand it.

Everyday for 10-15 minutes sit in silence. Just think over the sentence, “This too will pass.” Pondering over your own life will make you realize the true meaning of this sentence. Everything passes yet your real identity remains the same. That real you is your true self. To know that self is true meditation.
