Lectio Divina (‘divine reading’) is only slightly more involved than the technique of contemplative prayer. The physical mechanics are almost identical to other meditation techniques. The primary difference is that in the previous exercise you have a single word that is repeated (to the point that any thought of meaning is lost and attention is focused on the simple act of repetition), but in lectio divina the meditator has chosen a phrase from the bible to read repeatedly while considering closely the meaning of that text.
Historically, the Psalms have provided much material for this Christian technique, but really any book in the Bible will have plenty of useful verses. Taking a well known Psalm as an example, we can look at Ps. 23: “The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I lack. In green pastures You let me graze, to safe waters You lead me; You restore my strength. You guide me along the right path for the sake of Your name. Even when I walk through a dark valley, I fear no harm for You are at my side; Your rod and staff give me courage.”
Once the meditator has established a quiet space (as in contemplative prayer), he or she can quietly read through the chosen verse. Initially, the thoughts and impressions which arise as a result of mindfully going through the lines will be pretty generic, surface level material. That’s fine. It’s how our minds work.
But as the practitioner of this Christian meditation technique continues to read through and really begin to taste the meaning of the text, the message begins to morph from a general statement written to billions of people scattered over thousands of years into a message spoken just for the reader.
The message becomes a message of love from God sent directly to His child.
In that frame of mind, the meditator can begin to allow the words of the message to fade from awareness. However, instead of an absence, a simple sitting and resting with God can be experienced. When speaking of meditative experience we are often stuck using metaphorical language to describe it; in this case, the feeling engendered by lectio divina is not unlike the felt experience had by the small child who has been running around, laughing and playing (maybe even getting into a bit of trouble). Finally acknowledging his exhaustion and coming to his mother or father, he climbs into their lap, and simply rests in that secure embrace. In this case, we are the child and God is our loving parent who wraps His love around us.
Through both Christian meditation techniques of contemplative prayer and lectio divina, the expectation is that, over time, this repeated exposure to spending restful time in communion with our Father will produce wholesome changes in our spirit: unruly passions like anger and greed will wither, while healthy impulses toward compassion and a desire to fulfill God’s will in our lives grow. I address the usefulness of that assumption in other writings, but it is clear that either or both of these practices can make a powerful impact on the spiritual life of the Christian willing to explore them.

Meditation has a reputation as an activity related to religious practices and hippy-dippy pseudo-science. This is unfortunate, because meditation is a simple, effective stress management tool that can be used by a anyone – and solid medical research has shown that meditation is highly effective as a way to lower stress and even manage pain.
It’s particularly effective at the end of a long, stressful day – you can set aside a short period when you get home from work, meditate, and then enjoy your evening with a clear mind and more relaxed body.
Why meditation is great for stress
One of the pioneers of serious meditation research was Harvard’s Dr. Herbert Benson, who’s 1968 book “The Relaxation Response” showed that meditation had a measurable affect on stress, slowing breathing and heartbeat and lessening the body’s natural fight-or-flight response. Meditation will allow you to relax your body and focus your thoughts, thus focusing your mind and allowing you to let go of the day’s troubles. It allows your body to refresh its resources, which is good for your immune system, your blood pressure and your mental outlook.
When you meditate, your heart rate and breathing slow down, your blood pressure normalizes, and you use oxygen more efficiently. Your adrenal glands produce less cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline and you produce good, healing. Your mind clears, allowing you harper thought and greater creativity. Meditation has proved beneficial for people trying to give up smoking, drinking and drugs.
Simple meditation for anyone
Meditation isn’t a mystical, mysterious practice. It’s easy to do, and doesn’t take any special equipment or training. Meditation involves sitting in a relaxed position and clearing your mind. There are a number of methods for meditation – you can focus on a sound (like “om”), or on your own breathing, or on an object, or on nothing at all. You just need at least 10 minutes of quiet, free of distraction, although some people find that, with practice, they can meditate anywhere.
Here’s a couple of basic techniques:
1) Simple Breathing Meditation
Find a quiet room, and sit in a comfortable position, either on the floor or in a chair. Close your eyes.
Consciously relax the muscles in your feet, then your calves, and work way up your body until everything is loose.
Now focus your attention on your breathing. Breathe in deeply through your nose, and then let your breath out through your mouth. Count your breaths, and say the number of the breath as you let it out, which helps you to focus your mind and avoid distraction.
Do this for 10 or 20 minutes, then allow yourself to slowly come back up to full speed.
2) Focused Object Meditation
Choose an object, any object – a vase of flowers, a burning candle, a beautiful piece of fabric with a complex design. It can even be a coffee mug or a lamp.
Examine the shape, colors, shadow and light, texture movement of the object. Breathe deeply and rhythmically, and let your mind go wherever it wants, but stay focused on the object. Allow yourself at least 10 minutes to examine every detail.
3) Focused Sound Meditation.
Make a sound, over and over, focusing entirely on the vibration and tone. The classic meditation sound is “Om,” the Sanskrit word for perfection. Use the same rhythmic breathing to help slow your heartbeat and focus your mind.
4) Focused Imagery Meditation
Here, you create a mental image in your mind of a happy, relaxing place. You could be on a tropical beach, or floating on a raft in a mountain lake, or even lying in a king-sized bed in a luxury hotel – whatever you find the most calm and restful to think about. Breathe in and out, slowly and rhythmically. As thoughts enter your mind, let them drift back out – focus entirely on your “happy place as you breathe.
Unlike the use of prescription medication and herbal therapies, there are no potential side effects to meditation, and it doesn’t cost anything. No special equipment is required, and you can meditate no matter what your physical limitations. It does take some commitment and patience, but after a few sessions, you’ll find that meditation is a wonderful method for relieving stress – and you can do it anywhere!

One has to release all his desires and focus on his own self. Yet, it is important that he should feel himself conscious. He would feel that he is free from all the burdens in his life. Before we get into the meditation technique, first let’s talk about what is termed “no mind” or even in the zen tradition “mind of no mind.” No mind does not necessarily mean no thoughts. Often spiritual seekers manage to stop their thoughts without really experiencing any freedom whatsoever. This is not no mind. This is more of a physical doing of stopping thoughts which does not lead to deep meditation because it is a repression of thinking rather of the allowing thoughts to stop by themselves.
No mind rather means there is no attachment to the thoughts, no identification with the thoughts. The thoughts simply flow by themselves unhindered while your consciousness remains completely detached from the identification with thinking. In the Zen tradition you would say that you do not allow thoughts to take form but to remain formless.
When you reach no mind, there is an incredible sense of freedom. You are completely free of your personal self. There is no sense of a separate me but rather the experience one all-encompassing flow of conscious energy. In no mind, thoughts are simply experienced as this flow of formless energy. You experience yourself as this formless energy. No mind is very blissful!
So here is the no mind meditation technique:
In meditation try letting go of every thought that arises. Do not try and push the thoughts away. Rather, stop grabbing hold of them. Stop getting involved with them, identifying with them or even perceiving the content of the thought. Just be aware that a thought is arising and let it go.
Or if you already have grabbed hold of the thought, stop holding on to it. Let it go on its own and in this way you can learn to stop grabbing hold of the thoughts in the first place.By doing this, thoughts will run their course like a spinning wheel that loses its momentum and may even come to a halt. Do not make it a goal for thoughts to come to a halt, rather, keep your attention on allowing the thoughts to come and go without ever grabbing hold of them. This will take you to no mind.When you grab hold of thoughts you have a position, you have a fixed point of reference.But in no mind, when you do not hold on to thoughts at all, when they can arise without you ever touching them, or when they stop on their own, then you have no position. You have no fixed point of reference.In no mind, you do not experience yourself as anything. There can be no definition, no perspective. You cannot say you are here you cannot say you are not here. It is a freedom beyond all understanding. There is consciousness but there is no one there that can claim to be consciousness or to call it consciousness.It is pure and silent.And when you enter back into the mind, some of this purity and silence comes back with itand washes through your body and mind. When you are surrendered into no mind and realize that freedom, when you come back into thinking, some of that freedom comes back with it. The energy vibration of no mind gets carried over.And once you get used to remaining in this void of no-mind in zen meditation, you will want to keep coming back to it. You will begin to experience this energy of no mind in day to day living.

Grounding Meditation Technique
Grounding is a meditation method that unites you to the earth and natural world. It makes you feel stable and balanced and is a good meditation to do before different kinds of energy work and meditation. Grounding meditation exercises can be practiced alone as a method for you to experience a tranquil and serene feeling. It is a fairly lovely type of meditation and if you do your best to utilize your mind’s eye for visualization, it will give you some quite satisfying results and make you feel really magnificent afterwards. So try this easy meditation exercise and really sense the energy of the earth and how it merges with your energy body.
Before you begin you have to find a place where you are going to practice your meditation. It should be a quiet and serene location, where there are no interruptions around for instance like your television, mobile phone, computer, etc. And you also have to make certain that nobody is going to disrupt you while you are meditating and in that way break your concentration. So sit on a chair at this selected place and take moment to settle, until your body is relaxed and you are ready to continue. Let your feet be positioned flat on the ground.
Grounding ExerciseStep-By-Step Guide
Step 1Close your eyes and take a long deep inhalation through your nose and let it to fill your abdomen and chest. Breathe out the air and feel how it is able to get rid of fears and negativity from your body and mind. Take one more deep breath and direct it to your stressed muscles and negative energy fields. Exhale the air and make yourself feel more stress-free and calm.
Step 2Now concentrate on your legs and feet. Picture roots slowly growing from your feet and into the ground every time you exhale. So take a deep inhalation and then exhale the air with your feet making your roots grow even longer. See them move through the earth and soil and arrive at the center of the earth, where a bright energy ball is located.
Step 3Now visualize and feel how your roots are absorbing power from the energy ball and filling your whole body with energy. Continue to take up energy till you feel all energized and then pull back your roots and take a minute to feel your new energy level in your body before you little by little open your eyes.
